The organisers of the 2016 Dakar Rally cancelled the first stage of the event, due to run between the Argentinian cities of Rosario and Villa Carlos Paz, for "security reasons" on Sunday.
According to the brief statement released, the cancellation was prompted by heavy rains affecting the central region of Argentina. "The helicopters needed to guarantee the safety of the participants during the race are unable to fly due to poor weather conditions on the course of the special and at the end of the stage", Dakar Rally director Etienne Lavigne revealed.
