Koke fired the visitor into an early lead before Lionel Messi equalised for the Catalan, Luis Suarez scored the winner late in the first half to send Barca three point clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.
Atletico Madrid were reduced to nine men in the second half after Felipe Luiz and Diego Godin saw red.
Barcelona now has 51 points in first while Atletico is second with 48 points ahead of Real Madrid who has 44 points and plays Espanyol tomorrow.
