Lionel Messi's late brace secured a seemingly decisive first-leg advantage for Barcelona as the defending champions beat Arsenal 2-0 in an absorbing Champions League last-16 clash.

Messi and his forward colleagues Neymar and Luis Suarez headed to Emirates Stadium with 91 goals between them this season, but were initially starved of opportunities by a discipline Arsenal side.

Suarez played in Neymar, who squared the ball to Messi and the Argentine takes one touch before firing into the back of the net.0-1.

Substitute Flamini's first contribution after coming on is to bring down Lionel Messi inside the box with a clumsy challenge to concede a penalty.0-2.

The Argentine linked up with Luis Suarez and Neymar as they hit Arsene Wenger’s side on the break before slotting home a ball across the box from the Brazilian in the 71st minute.

Messi then doubled the advantage from the penalty spot when Mathieu Flamini brought him down inside the area with a terrible challenge after coming on as substitute.

It leaves Arsenal with an incredibly tough away leg

Wenger  Barcelona are 95 per cent through

"We were naive," he told BT Sport. "Similar to Monaco [in last season's last 16], when it looked like we could win this game we gave it away.

"That [second goal] makes it realistically very difficult, if not impossible [to come back]. We have to go there and fight.

"It is difficult because I thought in the last 20 minutes there would be room to score. We had the chances but didn’t score.
