Hernandez reveals the reason behind his Manchester United struggles

Javier Hernandez says his tag as a ‘super sub’ was the main cause of his Manchester United woes – and is now benefiting from a prolonged run in the first team at Bayer Leverkusen.

"What I was missing in the last two or three years, it was like I was playing sometimes and then returning to the bench," Hernandez told the Orlando Sentinel.

'I'll give everything until the last day' Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has visibly benefited from the holiday season as he was relaxed and serene when he arrived at the Säbener Strasse media centre on Tuesday afternoon. The coach had just overseen FC Bayern's second training session in the new year as preparations for the second half of the season pick up pace. For the first time after the winter holidays Guardiola faced the media and explained why he will leave the German record champions at the end of the season.

“If I were 55 or 60 I'd stay here until Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Uli Hoeneß or Matthias Sammer say, it's enough, Pep!” But at 44 years Guardiola feels “young enough” for a change after three years at Bayern. “The reason why I didn't extend my contract with Bayern is very simple: I want to be a coach in England, in the Premier League. That's the only reason,” explained Guardiola.

Guardiola needs new challenge

He has spoken to chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the subject “many times” and is “very, very happy and very grateful that the club wanted me to stay. They fought and did everything to make me stay,” said the Catalan. His decision was not dependent on “money or new players. I need a new challenge at this point in my career,” commented Guardiola, who wants to finish his career “not without experience in England.”

The Catalan revealed that he had offers from England before taking up his job in Munich in the summer of 2013. Back then he chose FC Bayern, where he has won five titles in the last two and a half years. Guardiola could not say where he will be next season. “I have several offers, but I haven't signed anything yet. When I have a new club I'll announce that.”

'Perfect decision' Ancelotti

Guardiola was full of praise for his successor Carlo Ancelotti: “Congratulations to the club and to Carlo. I think it's a perfect decision for the club, and I wish Carlo the best.” The 56-year-old Italian is “very experienced, he’s won titles in Italy, England, France and Spain. I'll continue to work here to pass on the best possible team to Carlo.”

Guardiola left no doubt as to his plans for the upcoming months in Munich. “I'll give everything until the last day of my contract. I'm happy to coach these players, to work at this club. I don't want to lose this atmosphere,” the Catalan commented. “It's a dream for me to develop new ideas with these players, and I'm very grateful to Bayern Munich for having given me this great chance.”

Guardiola now has about two weeks to prepare his team for the restart fixture against Hamburger SV and to launch the race for three possible titles. He has no doubt that his players “will give their best, for themselves and for the club, in this period. They're excellent pros,” Guardiola commented with regard to the second half of the season.

Douglas Costa voted best player

Douglas Costa gained a foothold in the Bundesliga as quickly as he sprints across the pitch. His peers have now selected the FCB winger as the best outfield player of the first half of the season! 30.3 percent of the pros employed by the 18 Bundesliga teams voted for Costa, clearly ahead of Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 23 percent. Two more Bayern players are among the top four: Thomas Müller on 18.8 percent, and Robert Lewandowski on 10.3 percent. 244 Bundesliga players took part in the poll conducted by weekly journal kicker.

Neuer again hailed by peers

The players also decided on the best goalkeeper of the first half-season – and Manuel Neuer retained the accolade by a considerable margin. 31.6 percent voted for Neuer, ahead of Köln's Timo Horn on 11.1 percent. Neuer was voted best goalkeeper for the fourth time in a row.

Müller rated top trio's closest contender

Who is the best player in the world? The pros answered this question too, bringing up a native Bavarian next to the trio in the race for the FIFA Ballon d'Or. According to the Bundesliga players, Thomas Müller is the only serious competitor to Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

Pros favour Bayern for the title

The 244 players favour FC Bayern as a whole. No fewer than 96 percent of all the players polled think the German record champions will top the table at the end of the season, ahead of Borussia Dortmund: 88.7 percent believe the Black and Yellows will finish runners-up. The pros favour FCB in the Champions League too. 40.6 percent think the Munich men will win Europe's elite club competition, closely followed by FC Barcelona on 40.2 percent. It is going to be thrilling!

DONE DEAL - MLADENOVIC TO KOLN

Koln have completed the signing of BATE Borisov defender Filip Mladenovic. The 24-year-old joins the Bundesliga club on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Koln sporting director Joerg Schmadtke: "He is an internationally experienced and strong-running left back who captured attention with his performances in the Champions League this season."

Guardiola: I'm leaving Bayern Munich for the Premier League

"The reason I have not extended my contract is simple. I want to manage in the Premier League, I haven't decided on a new club yet.

"I'm very happy and grateful to Bayern for the trust they've shown in me but I need a new challenge. "I have an opportunity to work in England. I think I'm at the right age and I feel it is the right move for me."
