Rafael Benitez take over at Newcastle United

Rafael Benitez has been appointed as the manager of Newcastle United after the Premier League strugglers finally sacked Steve McClaren on Friday

Benitez travelled to St James' Park to sign an initial three-year contract and will be in charge for Monday night's trip to leaders Leicester City.

Rafa Benitez replaces manager Steve McClaren at St James’ Park after the former Boro and England coach was relieved of his job.

A club statement read: "After the defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, the club has spent some time considering its position and has today concluded that Steve McClaren's employment with the club will end with immediate effect."

The Former Liverpool, Chelsea, Inter Milan  and Real Madrid coach has 10 games to steer Newcastle United to safety.
